a weekend with the girls

(silver lake at sunset)
This weekend is a rare, wedding-free one. The weather is cooling off in Michigan, and my season is coming to a close. Only five more events until I hang my hat up for the smashing 2008 season I've had. This weekend, however, I'm off with some girlfriends enjoying 48 hours without my laptop.

Instead of orchestrating a gorgeous wedding, my girlfriends and I are off to my family's cottage on Silver Lake. Although the boat is in, the campground is probably empty, and the snowbirds have gone South, we get to enjoy the cool, crisp air of Northern Michigan for a whole weekend together. We do not have an agenda, nor a time line. Basically, we eat good food, drink good wine, do a bit of shopping in nearby Pentwater, roast marshmallows over the fire by the lake, and talk, talk, talk.

One thing my mom always encouraged me to do was to make sure I kept in touch with my girlfriends after I was married. Everyone gets busy, schedules fill up, time passes and all of a sudden it's been since last Christmas since you saw a friend who lives in the same town. I realize this happens to all of us, and I know I need to take the time to call my friends who I haven't chatted with. I need to make coffee dates with old buddies. I need to reach out to my friends a bit longer. I do not have any kids, but I hear it gets even more difficult to keep in touch after you begin adding to your family.

Wishing you a wonderful week-end with the girls! It's so true what they say about kids ... they tend to make it difficult to find time with friends. At least for most moms. Luckily you still have girlfriend time!

Enjoy the fall air, and no internet! Love your blog : )

Your mom is a smart woman and gives good advice. Friends are so important and staying in touch can sometimes seem like a job in itself. If my insight is worth anything, I want you to know that children will take up your time, but they will also lead you to meeting many new friends as well. Fear not, it is all good!

Enjoy the fall weather and all that this weekend brings. I'll be thinking of you!

How funny --I ended up going to a wedding this weekend to not only share in my girlfriend's special day, but to reconnect with all of my girlfriends/sorority sisters from college:)

As I was preparing to make the trip, I realized that it had already been over three years since I had seen some of these women --most of which I had seen every single day in college!

Sitting during the ceremony itself (a traditional Greek orthodox one --so plenty of time to reflect:), as I sat next to all of my college girlfriends, I started thinking about how important our relationships are, and how we truly need to invest in them.

As I am now home from the weekends' festivities I consider it serendipity that I read your blog post about working on strengthening those types of relationships. First thing I did (after the dreaded unpacking), is call a girlfriend in town and schedule dinner this week....there may be things in our lives that take priority --like kids, careers, and making a home --but this weekend, I was reminded that it is most important to continue to invest in those relationships that round out the edges of the blocks of our family relationships that we work hard to build and maintain every day.

Thanks for such a thoughtful and for me, a well-timed blog post!

I miss my friends! The world of designing events can run your life if you let it. Congratulations for taking out to refresh and reconnect. It's time for a wine tour with my girls! :)

well it seems as though you had amazing weather for a mini-vacation in September (for MI at least).

I agree, I also need to break out of my busy schedule and make time for a lot... including my girlfriends. We all went to a Tiger's game this summer, which was a blast, wandering around the detroit bar scene afterwards.

It's just so hard getting into a routine, especially when you are juggling multiple activities!
