Sweet Endings

What makes a perfect ending to a fabulous dinner? Sweets, of course!

How do you decide on a cake? Taste is number one in my book, however, design is a very close second. If cake is important to you, either because of tradition, or because you are a cake lover, make sure you find the right pastry chef to bake & design the ultimate confection for your day.

There are many inspiring pastry chefs out there, but Cakegirls in Chicago is one of my favorite Midwest bake shops and they have a great online gallery to browse. April Reed has some phenomenal photos to look through too. And, of course, who can forget Sylvia Weinstock when mentioning wedding cakes? Talk about over-the-top cake inspiration!

Some of my favorite Grand Rapids bake shops include Mirabella Confections, Sweet Cakes Design, Second Floor Bakery and for amazing cupcakes, lil' Miss Cupcake.

Short on Time?

I recently met with a couple who was looking to get married in July - yes, a mere five months from now. We sat down for our initial consultation and since they both have demanding jobs, they simply haven't had time to plan - even the date is not set in stone.

I reassured them that it is completely possible to plan the entire wedding weekend in the time frame, especially with the date being somewhat flexible. I left the meeting feeling energized to begin the planning process and am anticipating creating an event that reflects exactly what they want for their big day.

If you have your heart set on a Spring wedding, but he doesn't pop the question until December, don't fret - get to work right away (or hire some help) and your Spring nuptials will be exactly what you have always wanted.

Giveaway | Carolina Brides

I have a few readers in South Carolina, so I wanted to pass on this great contest from Shanika of SJB Weddings & Events. Shanika is giving away a complete wedding coordination package to one lucky couple for their 2009 wedding.

The rules for this contest are simple - tell Shanika about that fabulous proposal that made you say yes. She is looking for the most romantic and beautiful wedding proposals out there. This is an excellent opportunity to win a wedding coordinator for your wedding day, but it is a great way to document how the most important question of your life was asked.

The Rules:
-Tell SJB Weddings & Events about how he proposed and feel free to attach any photos that help tell your story.

-Send all entries to info{at} sjbweddingsandevents{dot}com no later than March 14, 2009 at 11:59 pm.

-On March 15, 2009 the top five finalist will be selected and posted on the blog and readers will have the opportunity to select the winner in a final two-week vote.

-The winner will be announced on March 31, 2009.

Your wedding must take place in 2009 and in Charlotte, NC or the surrounding areas including other South Carolina cities including Columbia, Spartanburg, Winston Salem and Greensboro.

MWEP | Huge Thank You

I want to personally thank all the amazing people who made it out to the West Michigan MWEP meeting Tuesday evening. From florists and photographers to event planners and makeup artists, we had more than 50 people in attendance, which more than doubles our last attendance count.

Each of you showing up means so much to me and makes the MWEP group an amazing network of vendors. Thank you for the support, feedback and being active participants. If you're a Michigan wedding and/or event professional and are looking for a great place to network with other pros (for free!), please check out the MWEP blog for more info.

Our next event will be in April - if you'd like to be on the email list, please send me an email (pearls.events@gmail.com). And of course, I always will announce on this blog, so as long as you're following along here, you shouldn't miss the next get together announcement.

'Til next time!

What's For Dinner?

As you plan your wedding reception, you'll need to decide on what to serve your family & friends. From heavy appetizers and cake receptions to brunch and sit-down dinners, there are many variations. As you plan your menu, factor in the time of day, your likes & dislikes, and cost. Two of my favorite menus from 2008 were not-so-standard, and that is why they stand out.

Becky & Matt (above) were married on a gorgeous, Spring day last May and treated their guests to an afternoon Italian buffet. After their morning ceremony, guests made their way to Mangiamos!, a gorgeous mansion in the historic district of Grand Rapids, to enjoy brunch. The food was amazing and as you can see above, Becky sure enjoyed herself! It was my only brunch of the year, and I am already looking forward to the next.

Rose & Brian were celebrated their marriage last Fall at St. Cecilia's and worked with San Chez Bistro to cater their reception. San Chez is one of Grand Rapids' few tapas bistro, and Rose & Brian opted to have dinner served family style, which also added a social element to each guest table. The food was amazing and there was plenty to go around. The couple also served my all-time favorite cake of the year from Mirabella Confections.

Don't get me wrong - I love a great steak, and since my husband is a meat and potatoes kind of guy, he's happy with beef, however don't let anyone talk you into standard chicken dish if you're really craving gourmet sandwiches (like Melissa & Kyle last Fall).

Happy taste testing!

Since I do not normally post seven days a week, I enjoy amazing wedding photos on display at the top of the blog all weekend long. I'm going to start a weekly feature - Friday will now be Eye Candy day.

If you have beautiful weddings you'd like to show off on the Pearls Events blog, please submit three to fifteen photos to (pearls.events@gmail.com). I will email you before I post them, and of course give you full credit with a link back to your blog & website.

Great Find | Wal*Mart

When clients ask me what they can do between booking their florist and working on their vows, I remind them about the small details. I often see couples spending time on the big ticket items that they often overlook the small details which keep your guests thinking about how personal your wedding day was.

If you are not DIY kind of bride-to-be, I suggest finding some great ready-made items to fall in love with. I recently stopped by Wal*Mart to check out the Martha Stewart wedding collections. There are a few, however the Eyelet Collection (above) is absolutely adorable, and you can find everything from the invitations and favors, to the flower girl basket and your wedding album.

And FYI, these do not just look great online, as some web photos do, most of the products are really well made.

Weekend Eye Candy

Ever since the beginning of Pearls Events, I've had a cheerleader in Keri. She is a long-time friend of mine, who also happens to be the sister of an former boyfriend (from high school!), and my makeup artist for my wedding in 2007.

When she emailed to tell me her younger sister, Emily (the bride above), was engaged to be married, I couldn't have been happier for her - Keri loves her sister Emily and also loves weddings! And since Keri was a blog follower, I knew she'd lead her sister in the right direction as far as vendors & details in the Grand Rapids area.

Earlier this week, Keri sent over the photo link from This Photo Story. I ran over there to check them out, and I was SO excited - the colors were fabulous, the details were lovely and it was fun to see everything come together in amazing photos. Ooh, yes, and you DO spy cupcakes from lil' Miss Cupcake - one of Grand Rapids' favorites!

It's gloomy here in West Michigan this weekend, so enjoy this aqua and tangerine wedding - maybe it will cheer you up, like it did me!

Spotlight | Sondra's Ink, Part Three

For our final post on Sondra's Ink today, I wanted to show off some of my favorites she sent along - all in a classic black & white color palette. Ooh, and I could not help but show off this great Vegas-inspired invite - perfect for the card-playing couple.

Spotlight | Sondra's Ink, Part Two

For part two of our spotlight on Sondra's Ink, I wanted to highlight something Sondra does which I haven't ever seen before - personalized illustrations. The two images above show off Sondra's custom drawn pieces - the left is a wedding program which illustrates the entire wedding party party - personalized down to the hair color! The image on the left shows the bride & groom, and flower girl & ring bearer - completely adorable! As Sondra mentioned in the previous posts, these illustrations get RAVE reviews from clients & wedding guests alike.

One more post with Sondra's favorite invite is on its way - stay tuned later this afternoon!

Spotlight | Sondra's Ink, Part One

I have known Sondra of Sondra's Ink for about a year now, and I must say, she is a talented woman who does it all - she's a mom, busy business woman, and friend to many, me included. Sondra is always there to answer questions about invitations etiquette, which comes in handy!

Sondra was more than happy to answer a few of my questions about her and her design business, Sondra's Ink. I hope you enjoy learning a bit more about her and what she does. Check back later today for more of her designs.

A special thank you to Kerri of Taylor Grey Photography for all of the images.

When did you start Sondra's Ink?
My own wedding in 2002 was my very first. After that I did random design work for small businesses and other couples getting married, but I did not get serious until after my five year old daughter, Kate, was born. I had planned on returning to work after she was six weeks old, or at least doing full time childcare, but God had another plan! Kate was born with a serious heart defect which required open heart surgery when she was seven days old. After her heart surgery, it was strongly recommended not to have her around large groups of people for at least a year due to sickness (mostly RSV) and infection. So, long story short, daycare was not an option. I could not be a conventional working mom and I HAD to find a way to remain in the workforce for my own sanity. My sister-in-law convinced me to take my love of graphic design to a new level and in February 2004, Sondra’s Ink became official.

How many invitations do you do a year?
Last year was my busiest so far, and I worked with 107 brides!

What inspires you as you design?
The couple’s personal wedding style & personality, wedding colors, the cut/fabric/detailing/lace from the wedding gown, photographers, talking to or viewing the works of other designers, my children, china patterns/place settings, walking around downtown Holland (or Target), just about everything inspires me!!

There are many talented artists/graphic designers/photographers in the Midwest that I chat with & email from time-to-time and they are my number one inspiration. I get the opportunity to bounce ideas, get advice, and learn new methods from them all the time. I really wish I had the time to be in a professional designers guild or to take more college design classes.

How long is the process, from first talk to delivery date?
It completely depends on the project. Some items I can turn around in two days, and some take six weeks! It depends on the paper, materials, design, etc.

My custom drawn projects take the longest because they are painstakingly drawn on the computer to resemble the bride and groom and their clothing (gown, veil, tux, etc.). The wedding party can be as detailed or simple as the client wants. I can work from written descriptions or photos, it depends on how much time the couple wants to put into getting me the information needed, and how quickly they provide it to me. On the custom drawn programs I can honestly say the wedding gown and bridesmaids’ gowns take the longest design time because I make them so detailed that the wedding guests are blown away by the likeness and uniqueness of the programs. I sometimes get emails or notes from guests or vendors (that have attended a wedding that used the program) and they always say that it’s one of the most unique touches they have ever seen at a wedding! I love it! That is a huge compliment when it’s coming from someone I have never met and they take the time to contact me!

What is your favorite beverage?
If it’s cold - anything with peach flavor. And if it’s hot - White Chocolate Raspberry Mocha from Starbucks.

Spotlight | Forrester Farm, Part Two

For this afternoon's post, I wanted to spotlight a completely different wedding style by Forrester Farm. This is the lakeside wedding of Carly & Kia on Lake Bella Vista in Rockford, Michigan. Because I'm currently dreaming of the lazy days of summer in Michigan, I couldn't help but fall in love with the lake view, those yellow bridesmaid gowns, and of course, Ann's work.

A special thanks to Trudy Holtz Photography for the gorgeous images.

Spotlight | Forrester Farm, Part One

A few weeks ago, Ann of Forrester Farm, contacted me to chat about wedding flowers. We got together last week for a cup of tea and I must admit, it was one of the most dynamic vendor meetings I've ever had - I left feeling quite inspired! After seeing her work, and getting to know her a bit, I highly recommend her as a florist and look forward to working with her soon. Above are a few photos from Hannah & Wilson's September 27, 2008 wedding.

A special thank you to a Pearls Events favorite, Mindy Peterson, of This Photo Story.

Ann was kind enough to do a little Q & A with me. I hope you enjoy her answers as much as I enjoyed getting to know her. And stay tuned later this afternoon for another wedding by the Forrester Farm team.

How long have you been in the flower industry and what got you interested?
I've been interested in flowers for as long as I can remember - I give most credit to my Grandma, who from the time I could walk, would take me through her yard and point to and name all of the beautiful blooms that she grew. Forrester Farm began in 2000. My dream for as long as I can remember was to have a store that not only featured great products for your home, but also flowers from my personal garden. As my business and family has grown, the desire for a physical store has changed, and I’m blessed to love what I do while working from home base. We have almost 3 acres – which is such a great playground for the gardener in me.

What inspires your floral designs?
I really get inspired by many things – nature, photos, beauty. When I'm working with a bride, the most important thing is for me to know what she really wants - what is the perfect picture for her wedding? When I'm creating bouquets for the farmer's market or personal use, I let creativity kick in and put flowers together based on what I’m working with - blooms, containers, color theme, etc.

What magazines do you subscribe to?
Better Homes & Gardens Weddings, Brides Michigan, Floral Review, Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion, MaryJanesFarm, Better Homes & Gardens Country Gardens - I always get inspired by gardening magazines!

What is your favorite thing to do on your days off?
Laughing and enjoying my sweet husband and children! Favorite things also include: enjoying the Lake Michigan beaches, camping in our fun vintage camper, hanging out with friends, traveling, savoring wine, cheese and chocolate, working with our miniature horses and taking trips to local antique flea markets!

Are there some upcoming Forrester Farm events?
On Saturday, March 14 from 9am to 3pm, Forrester Farm will be exhibiting many hand crafted products at the Sunshine Church Art and Craft Fair in Grand Rapids, MI. Also beginning this year, we are having monthly Garden Room Events at the farm, May - October. Details are listed on the Schedule section of our website.

Spotlight | Darrin Wassom Photography, Part Two

Because Darrin sent over images of Grand Rapids, I wanted to show off my favorite West Michigan city at night. Darrin's photos of the Grand River have gotten amazing feedback - CBS is using the bottom image on their new, digital billboards around the city. They licensed the image for a year to be used for up to three locations - with one of those being right by my house, so I see it often - the image looks awesome!

I've been a resident of West Michigan almost my entire life, with the exception of my college years spent in Chicago, and I love our city, especially on a summer evening. The Grand River runs right through downtown, and with all the lights on the bridges, it's quite spectacular. On a Sunday evening in July, the city is asleep and peaceful; a perfect place for a late-night stroll.

Spotlight | Darrin Wassom Photography, Part One

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Darrin of Darrin Wassom Photography over the past few months. Darrin is one photographer you'll want to check out if you haven't heard of him yet. His passion is wedding photography, however he does maternity and boudoir photos, as well as commercial work. His Q&A is very detailed, so please read below for more info on his work, style and passion.

Don't forget to check back later today for part two, featuring some of his amazing Grand Rapids photos

What do you specialize in?
While I work in just about all areas of photography (commercial, maternity, boudoir, etc), my absolute favorite will always be wedding photography. I'm hopeless when it comes to romance so getting to be part of a wedding from the planning stages through the reception is extremely rewarding. Don't believe me? : ) I proposed to my wife in Paris, France on New Year's Eve after surprising her with plane tickets on Christmas. That's romance, baby! Of course, I may have peaked on the romance scale with that one act but I try as hard as I can every year to come close to that special day! Maybe I could tour all the cities of Paris around the globe? Paris, Kentucky? Check. Paris, Texas? Check.

Don't laugh but I cried through my vows because it was the happiest day of my life. I went from tears and trying to get the words out to startling our guests with the loudest vows recorded in the history of weddings. You know that feeling you get when you are trying soooooo hard to speak and then when the words come out you are essentially yelling? That was me at our wedding. Love rules. Plain and simple. I approach my wedding photography with the simple, love rules as my mission statement and capture your story from the eyes of a hopeless romantic. A quirky, nerdy hopeless romantic, but one that will always be in awe of the power of love. Cue Huey Lewis.

How long have you been taking photos?
I have been "that guy" with a camera for as long as I can remember. I always had a camera with me no matter the occasion. I even carried a very cheap, yet reliable Vivitar camera in my ammo pouch when I was in the Army. I carried my toothbrush in my other ammo pouch. The necessities of life, beautiful photos and clean teeth.

I began to get serious about photography a few years ago when my wife surprised me with a digital SLR camera on Christmas. I had been in awe of a particular photo of downtown Grand Rapids at night from a prominent photographer. I made several attempts at contacting said photographer in the hopes I could purchase a print without success. In a fit of anger after the last attempt, I declared I could probably make a better photo on my own. Of course, I had no idea what I was talking about and it was really an idle threat but Rhonda (my beautiful wife) saw my rant as the perfect gift idea. Since then I have photographed Grand Rapids at night countless times. I basically owe my start in professional photography to the very prominent photographer (that I still admire) that didn't return my calls and my wife, who believed me when I said I could make a better photo.

I opened my studio in February 2008 and haven't looked back. I am very fortunate to have two invaluable mentors in Jen of JK Photography and Amy of Amy Carroll Photography. They were kind enough to let me flood them with questions about the wedding industry and then hired me to work as their assistant photographer. In fact, if I don't have a wedding scheduled through my studio, you will find me working with Jen or Amy at their respective events. I'm kind of like the stray cat you fed once and now won't go away!

What sort of equipment do you use?
In the world of Canon versus Nikon, I fall squarely on the side of Nikon. Why did I choose Nikon? I can tell you that it was NOT because of their commercials featuring Ashton Kutcher. I chose Nikon because, quite simply, it fits my hands better than Canon. A fully-loaded camera weighs several pounds and will be carried 8 or more hours on a typical wedding day. In terms of specific equipment, I have Nikon D700 and D300 camera bodies with a wide range of tasty lenses from wide-angle, fixed and telephoto zooms. The lenses I use are extremely sharp and are outstanding in low-light environments such as a dark church. I use Nikon SB800's as my primary flash when on-location and Alien Bees strobes in the studio or on-location where extra light is needed.

For those with an extra penchant for techy talk, I use Adobe Lightroom for my image library and management and Photoshop for enhanced photo editing. All of my files are backed up hourly to external, mirrored hard drives and archived off site for at least 3 years. I'm a 'mac guy' and basically an Apple snob. My main editing computer is a Mac Pro with 4TB of storage and 16G of RAM. All of this glorious computing power is viewed on a 30" monitor and if I can say, it is a beautiful sight! I also have a Macbook that goes with me everywhere and yes, I even have an iPhone. I can't help myself.

Do you have a favorite past event?
That's a tough question to answer because I love all the events I have photographed. The first wedding I photographed was for my sister-in-law at Michigan State University, my alma mater. I didn't have a clue what I was doing but I was hooked immediately on wedding photography. I had one camera, cheap lenses and a book on 'how to be a wedding photographer'. Step one: Throw away the book. Step two: Tell the story through your lens. Step three: breathe. Step four: seek help for your newly formed addiction. It is my first wedding that I think will always be my favorite.

My stomach would like you to know that I photographed two weddings in 2008 where a particular reception hall features a Polish dinner of fresh kielbasa and kapusta (sauerkraut and cabbage) served in massive quantities. I love kielbasa and I really love kapusta so my stomach would rank these weddings as very memorable!

What inspires you?
I am inspired by life, as we live it on a daily basis. Every moment, in my opinion, is worthy of a photograph. I love when a photographer can capture the soul and character of a person in a single image. It is always rewarding to hear a client tell me that my photos captured their true essence. That's the best compliment I can ever receive.

I am continually inspired by other photographers and their individual styles. My favorite photos are ones where I ask myself, "how did they do that?" It can be a lighting style, a location or a moment that can get my creative juices flowing. The professional photographers in West Michigan are some of the best in the nation and it is a very close-knit community. I think the photography community inspires all of us to see creatively, make the best use of our surroundings and most of all, deliver high quality services to our clients.

What is a perfect non-wedding weekend?
If I am not photographing a wedding on a weekend then you will find my wife and I at our cottage in Traverse City. Northern Michigan is our second home and there is nothing better than relaxing with friends and family. Good food, good wine and hours spent hanging out on the lake or on the cross country ski trails is the recipe for a perfect weekend.

What is your favorite coffee drink?
I can't say I have a favorite coffee drink but it should be known that I am a coffee fanatic. I seek out coffee with reckless abandon and in pursuit of the "perfect joe". I believe I found coffee nirvana in, of all places, Bellaire, Michigan. There is a cafe in town called Moka and they roast their beans in-house. The espresso at Moka is pure bliss. There is no other way to describe the coffee goodness that comes out of Moka.

There is a new place in Grand Rapids called Madcap Coffee that is also out of this world. These guys know coffee and best of all, they are a locally-owned business. A true gem in the homogenized world of Main Street, USA.

Aletha as Pop Art

Kristine's work at Figment Studio really caught my eye, so much so, that I was begging for her to turn me into pop art. Above you will see that I got exactly what I was hoping for! Kristine took the photo on the right from my wedding day in June 2007, and turned it into the fun piece on the left. I look forward to having the print framed for my new office as soon as I receive it.

Figment Studio | Winner

Thank you for entering to win the gallery quality, digital print by Figment Studio. Kristine has gone through all of the entries and has decided on the big winner...

ASHLEY who commented with "My favorite scene is from Love Actually. I love the story line with Colin Firth and his foreign housekeeper. After spending weeks together unable to speak the same language, he realizes he loves her and goes to find her at her parents' restaurant. He then, in very broken Portuguese that he has struggled to learn, asks her to marry him. She answers back in broken English and they embrace. It gets me every time! ".

Congratulations to ASHLEY!

Ashley, please email me at [pearls.events@gmail.com] so I can send you the information you need to get in contact with Kristine at Figment Studio in NYC. She is so excited to start working on your Figment Studio digital print.

And don't forget to check back later today to see the custom piece that Kristine did for my new office! It's gorgeous and I'm SO excited to have it framed.

Pearls Events | Updates

Since some of you may never see my new business cards in person, I wanted to share the final design. It will be a two-sided, vertical card (that is side one & side two above) and Victoria is looking into getting them letterpressed on luxurious paper instead of flat printing, which I currently have. Thanks to April & Paul for the letterpress tips!

Another thank you to everyone on Twitter who helped me decide - I received SO many great responses and took many into consideration before I landed on this design. In the end, it was a combination of Daisy & Lisa's responses that helped finalize it.

Ooh, and you may be wondering...
Why, yes that is my face; talk about the ultimate personalization! Victoria took a profile photo of me (below, right) and created the silhouette (below, left). I realize this is a business card, but wouldn't silhouettes of a bride & groom be adorable on save-the-dates or a wedding invitation? I love the retro feel, but with the clean lines of a modern font, it's quite stylish.

Second Week | Recap

I promise I'm not going to continue recapping each week, however my second week was full of great appointments. As well as interviewing interns, looking through associate resumes, planning weddings and a photo shoot with Melissa, I met with some awesome people. A bit of THANKS to the vendors I had the pleasure hanging with last week...

Abbey of Syd Design
Amber of Amber Dawn Event Design
Ann of Forrester Farm
Jake & Kelly of Grand Rapids Bride
Jay of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Grand Rapids
Joy'l of Joy'l Ver Heul Design
Mary of Lucky Girl Weddings
Melissa of Melissa Diekema Photography
Michelle of Memorable Events

This week we'll be announcing the Figment Studio winner, as well as showing you the amazing piece of art Kristine from Figment created for my office. It's awesome!!! I have a few vendors to spotlight as well, so stay tuned...

A Little Love for Melissa

I spent Friday morning with Melissa and her fancy camera. We broke into Darrin's studio for some head shots, and then found a cool doorway for some outdoor shots. She did a fabulous job with my face, and I'm pretty excited to put these on my redesigned website in the coming weeks.

A HUGE thanks to my fun friend Melissa of Melissa Diekema Photography for putting up with my random ramblings and making my smile look not too fake!

If you follow me on Twitter, why yes this IS the infamous silk shirt I ruined. I accidently got lip gloss on it, and hand washed it with Tide. The stain didn't come out until I tried eye makeup remover (thanks for the tip, Jennifer!) at my last resort and it worked like a charm. File that tip away for future use!

Happy Valentine's Day

I wanted to wish everyone a fabulous Valentine's weekend. Tomorrow will be spent at home and I plan on making Greg dinner to celebrate - nothing too fancy. No presents either - gosh, we sound lame. However, I did just get a new car, so I think I'm set for a while.

Enjoy your weekend!

A Little More Show & Tell Post

I do realize last week was the big show & tell, however Kristen of K. Holly Photography just sent over some images from last week and I wanted to share. We were supposed to enjoy coffee, but a few minutes after I started the process, my trusty ole' coffee maker decided to throw up. Luckily the scones turned out dandy and we enjoyed tea instead.

She also captured some shots of my office that show the entire room. And that sweet paper weight in the bottom photo? My great-grandma Marie, who will be 95 in May, gave that to me as a bridal shower gift. She's collected them for years and has started gifting them now. It is one of my favorite items in the whole office!

A few more days | Giveaway

Don't forget to enter to win a gorgeous gallery quality, digital print in the size of your choosing, up to 18" x 24" from Kristine Baerlin of Figment Studio. Leave a comment with your favorite scene from a romantic comedy movie by Friday, February 13th at midnight, EST on the original post here.

Kristine will choose one winner over the weekend, based on your answer and Pearls Events will announce the lucky person on Monday, February 16th.

Top of my list

What is your absolute favorite blog?
I know, I know - this is tough. There are SO many gorgeous ones out there!

There are many blogs I enjoy, however one that tops my absolute favorite list is Bridal Buzz. Besides being a fellow Michigan blogger, Kristin finds the most adorable items to blog about and her posts continually inspire me. Kristin always has great images to accompany the little blurb about the item she's found. I love that she keeps each post short & sweet.

So, what is your favorite blog?

A New Favorite | Anna Elyse

Our fabulous August client just showed me her top choice bridesmaid gown. I went to the Anna Elyse website and was greeted with a gorgeous site, modern collection of bridesmaid dresses, and amazing fabric choices. How have I missed this company? After looking through their gallery, I see they've been featured in many magazines - magazines that I read!

What I love about their collections the most is the bride can pick the skirt style she likes, and each maid can choose the bodice that flatters them. If you're looking for a non-cookie cutter style but still want a semi-cohesive look, check out their collections.

My favorite? Peggy. I love the empire waist and sassy length. Which one did Leah choose? You will have to wait until her photo preview by Lotus Photographic to find out - the color is AMAZING!

Spotlight | Ellerbee's Custom Coffee

Deb of Ellerbee's Custom Coffee emailed earlier this winter to introduce me to her custom coffee. She's located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and what started as a fundraiser, has turned into a business that also caterers to the wedding & special event industry. If you are looking for a fun and yummy favor to give your guests, check out Deb's coffee gifts. Please enjoy the Q & A with Deb.

How did you get started?
My background is in graphic arts and web design. There was a time in my office where it seemed my co-workers were bringing in a fundraiser catalogs at least every other day - wrapping paper, popcorn, cookie dough, etc. and I started thinking about a fundraising business. In these tough economic times, churches and schools are especially interested in fundraising. I was thinking it would be nice to actually buy something I use anyway - that is where the initial idea for Ellerbee's Custom Coffee came from. Once I created the website, I found that my product had other uses, such as wedding favors and gift baskets.

Why coffee?
Most people appreciate good coffee, or know someone that loves great coffee.

Do you roast your own coffee?
All of the coffees sold on my site are fresh roasted to order right here in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Where do you come up with the cute artwork?
I design the labels myself, so it is really easy for the bride and groom to coordinate with their existing design elements. If the couple had their invitations designed, I can work with their designer or printer to coordinate the label for their coffee. Once the labels are designed and printed, they are applied to the coffee bags as close to the wedding date as possible to ensure the freshest coffee. The bride and groom can also design their own label if they would like!

What is your favorite coffee drink?
My favorite coffee is a rich french roast. I don't put anything in it. If I am feeling really crazy, I may do a skim latte. I am expecting my second daughter so I have switched to decaf!

Is there a minimum purchase?
The minimum purchase is 50 bags, however the cost goes down per bag the more you order.

First Week | Recap

By Friday afternoon, as I was enjoying coffee with Amanda from Bliss Weddings, I realized the week flew by. We were chatting about ad rates, websites and Eventology 2009 - and I decided it's not going to take long getting used to working full time with Pearls Events.

I enjoyed showing off my newly renovated office space this week to a few vendors - some old friends and some brand spankin' new. A huge thank you to all of my visitors this week...

A Lovely Winter Wedding

On December 27, 2008, Matt & Claire were married in Grand Rapids, Michigan. My friend Melissa, of Melissa Diekema Photography, did an amazing job capturing this wedding & all of its details. There were many DIY elements, I couldn't help but share this wedding with my readers. I absolutely adore the flowers, and the design elements - ooh, and did I mention the couple is completely cute?

With Spring on the far horizon - six more weeks, right? - we have plenty more snow in store around West Michigan. And although I'm longing for yellow daffodils, Easter dresses & warmer weather, I'm loving the gorgeous winter colors and crisp white snow.

A huge thank you to Melissa for sharing these photos with us!

The Right People

We are fortunate enough to work with some amazing vendors. I cannot stress enough how each vendor can make or break your day. While planning your event, make sure you're certain about each choice before signing the dotted line - weddings cost enough without second thoughts and losing retainer fees.

After you've met with a few vendors in the same category, do your research. As Jenn of Modern Day Floral commented, trust and chemistry are key when selecting a vendor... But, what if you clicked with more than one photographer? When researching vendors, don't overlook the resources available to you. Most of the following are free and I suggest checking these out before you make any financial commitments.

  • Family & friends If you loved your friend's photos/cake/venue/etc., talk to her about the experience--from the planning, to the wedding day, and then the follow up. There is nothing better than a personal recommendation from someone you trust.

  • Reviews from past clients If you've found a wedding planner/deejay/photographer you like, ask for references. Professionals will not have a problem giving you names and contact info to a few former clients that will share their experience with you.

  • Reviews from websites Wedding websites, such as WeddingWire, are a place where real brides review their vendors after their event. Google the vendor and see what comes up.

  • Local message board Message boards, such as The Knot, are a place where you can connect with local brides about vendors, their planninng progress, advice and chit chat. You will find all sorts of brides, with different budgets and styles here.

  • A wedding consultant This one might not be free, but can be affordable. Although you may not want or need to hire a wedding planner, most consultants offer hourly rates where you can discuss vendors. Ask for their personal feedback with each vendor in your price range. Even if you spend a couple of hours with a consultant, you can save yourself hours of research.

Enjoying the day

Today is my 28th birthday and I'm celebrating with my cousin, Tyla, in the morning for Birthday Tea. And then again for dinner with Greg - I think we'll hit up one of our Grand Rapids favorites, Shang Hai Ichiban, for Japanese and a bit of sushi. I always take my birthday off of work, so see you tomorrow!
